The Sundarbans Affairs
Department was formed in 1994 effectively
institutionalising the SDB functions and activities
created during the IFAD project. In 1995 an
inter-ministerial committee was formed Policy and
Planning Committee M.I.C. Development and Planning
chairperson includes M.I.C. Dept Finance, Transport,
Tourism, Fishery, Public Works, Health and Family
Welfare, Forest, Public Health, Engineering, Power,
Agriculture, Irrigation and Waterways, Sundarban
Affairs, Sabhadhipati of north and south 24 Paraganas
Zilla Parishad and District Magistrates of North and
South 24 Paraganas. Secretary of Sundarban Affairs is
Member-Secretary.
Terms of Reference of the
Committee are:

Ensure
effective coordination between the districts
of north and south 24-Paraganas for
integrated development of 19 Blocks |

To integrate
the plans and programmes evolved by District
Planning Committees of the North and South
24-Paraganas |

To oversee and
co-ordinate implementation of various
developmental programmes |

|
To identify
and assess special problems of Sundarban
area along with critical gaps that may exist
in the planning as well as implementation of
various programme |
|
|
To suggest and
recommend the need and measures for
appropriate plan for Sundarban area. |
