The existing tourism in Sundarban is
promoted on a low-key with an aim to minimise the
negative impact of tourism on Wildlife and its habitat.
The tourists are taken in a controlled manner and
permits are issued by the Forest Department. The
tourists are restricted into the buffer area of Tiger
Reserve and whole of 24 Paraganas (S) Division. Entry
into the Core Area, which is also a National Park, is
prohibited to the outsiders. The Forest Department
has constructed watchtowers at Sajnekhali,
Sudhannyakhali, Netidhopani, Dobanki, Bakkhali, Lothian
Island, Bonnie Eco-tourism Camp and Burir Dabri to
facilitate the tourists to appreciate the rich mangrove
forests and to improve the sight of wildlife including
Royal Bengal Tiger. Interpretation Centres have
been set up at Sajnekkahli, Bagabatpur and Bonnie
Eco-tourism Camp to educate the tourists about
forest, wildlife and environment. These interpretation
centres help in the creation of awareness among the
tourists. Two tents have also been erected at Bonnie
Eco-tourism Camp for night halt of tourists. Forest
Department, Govt. of West Bengal is also constructing
two ethnic cottages at Bonnie Eco-tourism Camp and at
Chulkati Camp to attract the tourists. The FPC members
will provide the facilities here. The tourists enter the
Sundarban area through various points namely Namkhana,
Harwood Point, Ramganga, Raidighi, kantamari on the
western side and Canning, Sonakhali, Jharkhali,
Dhamakhali, Nazat and Hingalganj on the eastern side.
The other areas of interest in Sundarban
include Ganga Sagar, beaches at Bakkhali and Frezerganj
in Namkhana, Bhagabatpur Crocodile Breeding Centre in
Pathar Pratima, Lothian Wildlife Sanctuary, Kalash,
Mayadwip – the place where Olive Ridley Turtles lay
eggs, Piyali and Sajnekhali. |
