SDB : ITS COMPONENTS DIVISIONS
In pursuance of the State Government’s policy of entrusting the planning and co-ordination of all developmental activities in the backward regions to specified area development agencies, the Sundarban Development Board was set up in 1973 under the administrative control of Development Planning Department for integrated and accelerated development of Sundarban Region. In 1994, a new Government department namely Sundarban Affairs Department was created and the Sundarban Development Board was placed under its administrative control. The operation area of this department is spread over 16 police stations and 19 Blocks / Panchayat Samities of South & North 24-Parganas districts.
Developmental activities undertaken by the Sundarban Affairs Department are implemented through Sundarban Development Board. Sundarban Development Board has since been implementing the work-Programme through its four working Divisions.

  • Engineering Wing : The Engineering Wing of Sundarban Development Board comprises of one circle consisting of five divisions and nine Sub-Divisions. The Chief Engineer, S.D. Board heads this wing. Out of five divisions, four are working divisions, which are directly implementing the civil works schemes of the Board. Another division namely Survey Investigation & Design Division (SID) has been created in 2003 for preparation of drawing, design and estimates of different schemes/projects of the Board. A new working division viz. Civil Engineering Division No.-IV has been created in June 2006. This division has started functioning from the financial year 2007-08. The territorial jurisdiction of each of these four working divisions has been reorganized vide G.O. No.-089/SA/O/3E-7/06, Dated-14.7.06.The operation area under these divisions are as follows:

The Engineering Divisions of Board has a total contingent of 283 Officials and staff against total sanctioned posts of 354.

 
 

 

 
 
  • Agriculture Division :
    The activities relating to agriculture and allied activities are implemented through 27 Growth Centres located in 19 blocks of Sundarbans under the supervision of three Branch Offices namely Kakdwip (9 Growth Centres), Canning (10 Growth Centres) and Nezat (8 Growth Centres) Branch Offices. Total contingent of officers and staff under this division is
    167.

 
 
  • Social Forestry Division :
    The activities are implemented through three Range Offices and six Beat Offices. The Range Offices are located at Namkhana, Canning in South 24-Parganas and Hasnabad in North 24-Parganas district. Total contingent of officers and staff under this division is
    186.

 
 
  • Fishery Division :
    This division has one Fishery Project at Jharkhali in Basanti P.S. of 24-Parganas (South). Total strength of officers and staff of this division is

Apart from these working divisions there are Administrative Division and Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Division under Sundarban Development Board.
There is a separate establishment of Sundarban Affairs Department.
The Sundarban Affairs Department implements following activities through various divisions of the Sundarban Development Board.
(a)
    Promotion of social, economical, and cultural advancement of the people;
(b)
Creation of infrastructure facilities through improvement of transport and communication, water resources, irrigation and drainage;
(c)
   Development of livelihoods through implementation of socio-economic and allied schemes, research, training, and rural technology;
(d)
   Conservation and development of natural resources for ecological balance of this sensitive bio-sphere;
(e)
    Awareness Programmes, etc.
